His latest book, \u201cCaravan to The North,\u201d\u2014illustrated by Manuel Monroy and translated by Elizabeth Bell\u2014follows the character Misael Mart\u00ednez, a young boy leaving his native home of El Salvador to join the caravan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe idea about this book is born out of my own experience because I am also an immigrant,\u201d Argueta said. \u201cWhen I heard that there was a caravan coming from El Salvador to the states, I needed to go meet them and talk to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Misael is a symbol\u00a0that represents all the courageous families who left their homes in Central America. Misael leaves with his family from Plaza Divino Salvador, knowing he won\u2019t return back to his beautiful country of El Salvador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/CaravantotheNorth-Portrait-WEB.jpg?resize=359%2C478&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42693\" width=\"359\" height=\"478\"\/><figcaption>Jorge Argueta. Photo: Holly Ayala<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of the people that I saw were coming from small towns\u2014from places with gang violence,\u201dArgueta said. \u201cThe people that I saw, that I spoke to, are humble people. Most of the people leaving say, \u2018I don\u2019t want to leave [El Salvador] but there\u2019s no more hope and I want a chance at a better life.\u2019\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a decision that is central to the novel, made by more than one character, each coming to terms with their own realizations for why leaving north is the only viable option. Misael\u2019s mam\u00e1 shows bravery as she decides to uproot her family and join the caravan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMam\u00e1 says, \u2018We\u2019ve tried. I\u2019ve looked for work. They won\u2019t hire me. These boys make me brave. I\u2019m going to the United States,\u2019\u201d Argueta writes in the book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This book&nbsp; is a testimony for how leaving home is a painful experience and yes, the book hopes for the reader to empathize with the travelers. But the book hopes more for the reader to understand the caravan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Argueta does beautifully is his honest portrayal of sadness: He writes, \u201cNow I know, sadness is like not seeing, not hearing. It seems like everything stops, even the air, even the North, and your heart leaves you sigh by sigh. I\u2019d better sing and keep dreaming.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This novel not only shines because it\u2019s true to the caravan experience, but because the novel is written for children. This book is impossible to put down. Argueta\u2019s poetic form in storytelling allows the reader to connect and see themselves in the bravery of the characters. The excellent section breaks keep the pacing in real-time as the migrants are experiencing crossing with the caravan. This book is beautiful and a must-read for all allies of the Central American caravan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Argueta has been fighting for migrant rights since he immigrated to the United States from El Salvador in the 1980s.
