The gentrified Mission District.<br> In the corner of 24th and Capp streets, a very iconic corner of the barrio, seven artists collaborate in the painting of a large mural. Five young women and two men. <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is an impressive mural, covering the fa\u00e7ades of two buildings, right above the offices of the offices of Calle 24.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In front of the mural, a banner announces JUSTICE4AMILCAR MURAL.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe mural is meant to be our counter story to the official police version of the killing of Am\u00edlcar P\u00e9rez L\u00f3pez. It will be our report answering the police report,\u201d says Carla Wojczuk, the leader of the effort and one of the seven artists perched above the busy streets.  <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I ask her about the process of gathering the artists who would eventually form the team, she says: \u201cInitially, I wanted an all-female group\u2026but it was hard to realize\u2026so I reached to those who could be truly committed\u2026Those who\u2019d be ready to ride or die.\u201d <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She laughs afterwards\u2026perhaps to attenuate what to some might sound a bit too combative? <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe needed people ready to commit,\u201d she clarifies. \u201cA male might change the dynamics\u2026but Pancho (Pescador) and Cristi\u00e1n (Mu\u00f1oz) were ready. Pancho was just in it, from the first time we met\u2026and Cristian\u2026he\u2019s a worker. He\u2019ll show up.\u201d <br> The other artists are Flavia Mora, Luc\u00eda Gonz\u00e1lez Ippolito, Ana Lisa Escobedo and Adriana Adams. They all bring that needed strong commitment to the work and various skills.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe final team was a combination of people I thought would be important,\u201d Wojczuk says. \u201cFor example, Flavia Mora painted the water jug drop-offs in the desert, as it relates to her family\u2019s own migration story.\u2026Or, in the case of Luc\u00eda Gonz\u00e1lez Ippolito, (who also helped with the final design)\u2026she has been in charge of recreating a pair of hands that her stepmother, (muralist Juana Alicia) had painted in the 1980\u2019s\u2026the hands of a young Salvadoran man who is trying to fend off the threat of the rifles pointed at him by military men\u2026In the Am\u00edlcar mural, the rifles have become guns used by the SF Police\u2026the type used by those who killed Am\u00edlcar L\u00f3pez\u2026or Alex Nieto.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, the collaboration among the members of the team has worked. <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has felt really cohesive,\u201d Wojczuk says. \u201cAll the artists bring a mix of things that personally would be important to the message and to the aesthetics of the images to be painted.\u201d<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ask Mu\u00f1oz, one of the two male artists (both originally from Chile) about his experiences working on the mural and collaborating with the five young women. \u201cI feel honored\u2026 and accepted\u2026as a man coming from Chile,\u201d says Mu\u00f1oz. In Chile, Mu\u00f1oz was a muralist with  a famous mural group, the Ramona Parra Brigade.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel that the women in our group have a more romantic appreciation of life in general\u2026a very feminine design\u2026but also a very strong design\u2026including softer colors, delicate gestures and symbols,\u201d he says.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the end, we are united by a common work, our love for community,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz continues. \u201cSurrounded by the noise, the smells, the variety of emotions that we can feel while we are up on the scaffolds.\u201d<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sounds from the street, the smells, all rises to the scaffolds. It is the life that unfolds beneath those artists, something that Carla is eager to share.<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love it,\u201d she says. \u201cI really do. It is a mix\u2026we are on public display up there\u2026way up high\u2026it is a bit of a performance\u2026although sometimes you just want to be intimate with your work\u2026It is a combination\u2026you get to be into everything that goes around you\u2026but you\u2019re also away\u2026It is a bonding experience with the people who are up there with you\u2026in our own little city\u201d.  <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Towards the end of our conversation, I ask how does it feel to be in her position, a white woman in charge of a mostly Latino\/a group of artists. She gets more serious and pauses, briefly. \u201cThis is a really great responsibility that I feel\u2026a cultural responsibility\u2026to discern when it\u2019s my turn\u2026or my responsibility to listen and when to speak\u2026and there\u2019s no clear answer to that. But I feel so connected to the people of the Mission\u2026to the energy of the place\u2026 and I have prepared\u2026learned the history, especially the history of the murals\u2026and the more I learned about the history, the more I felt compelled to put something back in.\u201d<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been over two years since the project started to come alive. \u201cIt was only a passionate idea,\u201d says  Wojczuk. <br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the beginning of November, right around the celebration of Day of the Dead, the mural in memory and honor of a murdered young Guatemalan immigrant will come to life. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is a sunny day in San Francisco\u2019s Mission District.
