Growing up a \u200chumble\u200c \u200cfirst-generation\u200c \u200cMexican-American\u200c \u200ckid\u200c \u200cfrom\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cBay\u200c \u200cArea\u200c, Corrales dreamed \u200cof\u200c \u200cplaying\u200c \u200cprofessional\u200c \u200csoccer\u200c \u200cfor\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200cnewly\u200c \u200cnascent\u200c \u200chometown\u200c \u200cclub,\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cSan\u200c \u200cJose\u200c \u200cClash (later renamed the Earthquakes).\u200c \u200c<\/p>\n

Through\u200c \u200chard\u200c \u200cwork\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cdetermination,\u200c \u200che\u200c \u200choped \u200cto\u200c \u200cmake\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cteam,\u200c \u200cbecome\u200c \u200cchampion,\u200c \u200clift\u200c \u200ctrophies\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cbe\u200c \u200cwritten\u200c \u200cinto\u200c \u200chistory\u200c \u200cbooks.\u200c \u200c<\/p>\n

He\u200c \u200ccaptained\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200chometown\u200c \u200cEarthquakes club\u200c \u200cthrough\u200c \u200cits\u200c \u200cmost\u200c \u200cglorious period,\u200c \u200choisting two\u00a0 <\/span>MLS Cups, becoming \u200can\u200c \u200cMLS\u200c \u200cAll-Star\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cat\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cend\u200c \u200cof\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200ccareer\u200c,\u200c and was carried off the field atop the shoulders of his teammates during his final game in 2013. Of the original MLS players who were part of the league\u2019s inception in 1996, Corrales was final remaining player, the \u201clast\u200c \u200cman\u200c \u200cstanding.\u201d\u200c<\/p>\n

Corrales\u2019\u200c \u200ccollision\u200c \u200ccourse\u200c \u200cwith\u200c \u200cgreatness\u200c \u200cbegan\u200c \u200cwhen\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200cfather\u200c \u200cmoved\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cfamily\u200c from Los Angeles \u200cto\u200c \u200cSinaloa,\u200c \u200cMexico\u200c \u200cat\u200c \u200cage\u200c \u200ceight\u200c. \u200cIt\u200c \u200cwas\u200c \u200cwhile\u200c \u200cin\u200c \u200cMexico\u200c \u200cthat\u200c \u200cCorrales\u200c \u200cfound\u200c \u200chis\u200c calling.\u200c \u200c<\/p>\n

\u201cGrowing up, especially since I\u2019m from Mexico, I\u200c \u200calways\u200c \u200cwanted\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200cbe\u200c \u200ca\u200c \u200cprofessional soccer player,\u201d\u200c \u200csaid Corrales\u200c. \u201cThat\u2019s every kid\u2019s dream.\u201d \u200c<\/p>\n

At\u200c \u200c15,\u200c \u200cwhen\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200cfamily\u200c \u200cdecided\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200cmove\u200c \u200cback\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cUnited\u200c \u200cStates,\u200c \u200che\u200c \u200cconvinced\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200cfamily\u200c \u200cto\u200c move\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200cSalinas,\u200c \u200cCalifornia\u200c \u200cso\u200c \u200cthat\u200c \u200che\u200c \u200ccould\u200c \u200chave\u200c \u200ca\u200c \u200cbetter\u200c \u200copportunity\u200c \u200cat\u200c \u200cdoing\u200c \u200cso.\u200c \u200c \u200c<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny, I used to cut \u200cschool\u200c to go run on the beach or in the mountains,\u201d Corrales said. \u201cI don\u2019t recommend that.\u201d\u200c\u00a0 <\/span>\u200c<\/p>\n

His hard work training, however, didn\u2019t go unnoticed and he was entered into Major League Soccer\u2019s inaugural draft.<\/p>\n

Although\u200c \u200cinitially\u200c \u200cdrafted\u200c \u200cby\u200c \u200cColombus\u200c \u200cCrew\u200c \u200cwith the 81st pick on\u200c \u200cDraft\u200c \u200cDay\u200c 1996,\u200c \u200cSan\u200c \u200cJose\u200c \u200cquickly\u200c \u200cbought\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200crights\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cbrought\u200c Corrales\u200c \u200chome\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200cfeature\u200c \u200cfor\u200c \u200cSan\u200c \u200cJose\u2019s\u200c first-ever MLS\u200c \u200cteam. The rest is history, one that Corrales is still writing.<\/p>\n

Now \u200cin\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cannouncer\u2019s\u200c \u200cbooth\u200c, he hopes his passion converts more Bay Area\u2019s Latinx soccer fans into avid Earthquakes supporters.<\/p>\n

\u200cHe\u200c \u200cshared\u200c \u200cthat\u200c \u200cas\u200c \u200ca\u200c \u200cplayer,\u200c \u200chis\u200c \u200cfriends\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cfamily\u200c \u200cwould\u200c \u200ccome\u200c \u200cout\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200cEarthquakes\u200c \u200cgames\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cthey\u200c \u200cfelt\u200c \u200clike\u200c \u200cfamily\u200c \u200caffairs every week.\u200c \u200cCorrales wants to recreate that same atmosphere at Earthquakes\u2019 matches.<\/p>\n

In a few years, the San Jose faithful might have another Corrales to cheer for. Ramiro came out of retirement to become player\/coach\u200c \u200cof\u200c \u200cSanta\u200c \u200cCruz\u200c \u200cBreakers\u200c \u200cFC so that he could help the growing club and guide his son\u2019s training a bit more closely as 13-year-old Ramiro III works his way through the Breakers youth academy.\u200c Ramiro III may follow in his father\u2019s decorated footsteps.<\/p>\n

In addition to winning MLS Cups for San Jose in 2001 and 2003, he was a member of the Earthquake squad that earned the\u200c \u200cSupporter\u2019s\u200c \u200cShield\u200c \u200c(best\u200c \u200cMLS\u200c \u200crecord)\u200c \u200cin\u200c \u200c2012.\u200c \u200cAs a member of SK Brann, he \u200cwon\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cleague\u200c \u200ctitle\u200c \u200cin\u200c \u200cNorway \u200cin\u200c \u200c2007\u200c and\u200c \u200chas\u200c written\u200c himself \u200cinto\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200chistory\u200c \u200cbooks\u200c \u200con\u200c \u200cnumerous\u200c \u200coccasions.\u200c He\u200c\u2019s enshrined in both the Earthquakes\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cSalinas\u200c \u200cValley\u200c \u200csports\u200c \u200chall\u200c \u200cof\u200c \u200cfame, and has\u200c \u200cbeen\u200c \u200ccalled\u200c \u200cup\u200c \u200cto\u200c \u200crepresent\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cUnited\u200c \u200cStates\u200c \u200cat\u200c \u200cboth\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cinternational\u200c \u200clevel\u200c \u200cand\u200c \u200cat\u200c \u200cthe\u200c \u200cOlympics\u200c, where\u200c \u200che\u200c \u200cplayed\u200c \u200cagainst\u200c \u200clegends\u200c the \u200clike\u200c of \u200cformer\u200c \u200cBarcelona\u200c \u200cgreat,\u200c \u200cXavi Hernandez.\u200c \u200c<\/p>\n

But of all the accomplishments, that first title stands out.<\/p>\n
