Photo: Mark Jayson Quines<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Living for the city isn\u2019t just a Stevie Wonder song; for the father-son artist duo\u2014George Crampton and George Crampton-Glassanos\u2014it\u2019s a lifestyle. Sitting on the porch, walking around the city and working together painting houses are all things that have sparked the love they carry for San Francisco, and it shows in their art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cI feel very fortunate to have him show me everything,\u201d Crampton-Glassanos, 29, said of his father. \u201cHis use of color and line work are definitely a huge influence on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">But Crampton\u2019s art can\u2019t be viewed in a gallery or online, that privilege is reserved for family and friends. Crampton, 65, moved to the city from Illinois in 1976 as a student attending the San Francisco Art Institute. He and his wife raised a family for 38 years in the Mission, including their son George, until the family was Ellis Acted out in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">A native son of San Francisco, the younger George has showcased his paintings in galleries around the Bay Area. This will be the first time father and son will present their work, &#8220;Livin\u2019 For the City,\u201d together in the neighborhood they love on June 29 at Acci\u00f3n Latina\u2019s Juan R. Fuentes Gallery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cI think our art looks good mixed up together,\u201d said Crampton-Glassanos, just before his father weighed in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cGeorge is far more talented than I am,\u201d Crampton said of his son.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40968\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40968\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40968\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2019_06_16-QUINES_ELTECOLOTE_SF_CRAMPTONGGLASSANOGEORGE-017_web.jpg?resize=480%2C600&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Crampton poses for a portrait with one of his original paintings on June 16, 2019. Photo: Mark Jayson Quines<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p6\">The paint on Crampton-Glassanos hands, clothes and black-rimmed glasses is a testament to his craft. When the father and son aren\u2019t creating art, they work around San Francisco as general contractors. Either together or apart, Crampton-Glassanos works part-time contracting for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). Through the years, they\u2019ve kept their art alive in between work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Crampton inherited the drive to paint from his mother, who was an artist. His wife, Mary Glassanos, is a photographer who also attended the art institute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">The couple\u2019s interest in art was passed down to their son George, later attending the San Francisco School of the Arts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cHe used to draw nonstop, like all the time, he always had a pencil in his hand or a pen, and he would always be drawing,\u201d Mary Glassanos said of her son. \u201cI just knew that\u2019s what he was going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40976\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-40976\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/2019_06_16-QUINES_ELTECOLOTE_SF_CRAMPTONGGLASSANOGEORGE-027_web-1.jpg?resize=480%2C600&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Crampton-Glassanos stands in front of his mural painted in Clarion Alley, June 16, 2019. Throughout years Crampton-Glassanos has painted over a dozen murals in the city, some of which are still standing. He gazes over his coffee table, which has become his preferred work space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cWhat I think really stood out to us was the idea of having a father son duo at Acci\u00f3n Latina in general,\u201d said Fatima Ramirez, Acci\u00f3n Latina\u2019s cultural arts manager, who worked with father and son to produce the show. \u201cWe find that our events are enriched by intergenerational conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Crampton-Glassanos maintains a spot in Clarion Alley with his mural \u201cBorn and Raised.\u201d His father is no stranger to murals as well. Crampton painted a mural inside the famous Automatt recording studio, where artists like Santana worked. He paints for himself in his studio at home, making cardboard cities out of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>materials at arms reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cI think his artwork was unique,\u201d Mary Glassanos said of her husband. \u201cI don\u2019t remember anybody else who did the kind of stuff that he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">The city provides the father and son with plenty of motivation for their artwork. They learned to appreciate the cranes outside their windows, the sunset over the hills and the surrounding architecture that defines San Francisco. Their works are completely their own yet similar, but both live for the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cWe can\u2019t help but be influenced by our environment,\u201d Crampton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">His son agrees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cThat\u2019s definitely the main influence,\u201d Crampton-Glassanos said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">[su_carousel source=&#8221;media: 40964,40965,40966,40974,40978,40977,40975&#8243; limit=&#8221;100&#8243; link=&#8221;lightbox&#8221; width=&#8221;800&#8243; height=&#8221;540&#8243; responsive=&#8221;no&#8221; items=&#8221;1&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Roaming the Mission helped Crampton-Glassanos appreciate the art, which now serves as a comforting reminder of his childhood. After vandals defaced his Ben Davis sign at Arik\u2019s on Mission Street (between 22and and 23rd streets), Crampton-Glassanos decided to restore it to its former glory. Later, Ben Davis the clothing company, contacted them and sent a box of clothes. Now, no one dares to spray paint over the sign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">Recently, Precita Eyes muralist Max Marttila approached Crampton-Glassanos, his childhood friend, to collaborate on a mural. The mural\u2014Once Upon A Time in the Mission\u2014is a tribute to those who\u2019ve lost their lives to gang violence, and is located on Shotwell and 24th Streets. Some of those who died were friends of Max and George.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cThat job was really perfect to bring him on, because it was connecting with a space that was very important to him,\u201d Matilla said. \u201cI really appreciate his commitment to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">No matter what scenery they come across in the city, the father and son find beauty in any corner. And recognition is something the multigenerational artists don\u2019t seek when they premiere their art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cThe best thing that could happen is that someone is inspired by it,\u201d Crampton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">\u201cThat\u2019s our No. 1 goal is to just inspire people,\u201d his father added. \u201cI want all my friends and family there and I want to share with them what I\u2019ve been working on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><i>\u201cLivin\u2019 for the City: A father and son paint San Francisco\u201d opens 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 29 at Acci\u00f3n Latina\u2019s Juan R.
