<\/b>The controversial proposal for majority-market-rate housing at 1515 South Van Ness Ave. (nicknamed by detractors \u201cthe titanic mess on South Van Ness\u201d) has seemingly turned into a massive win for Mission housing advocates this week.<\/p>\n

Following years of community protests against the project, Mayor London Breed announced on June 11 that the city has purchased the property from its previous owner, developer Lennar Multifamily Communities LLC. On the currently vacant 32,000 square-foot site, San Francisco will \u201cpotentially build 150 new family units\u201d\u2014all permanently affordable and likely serving families who earn between 35 to 80 percent of the area median income, according to the mayor\u2019s office press release.<\/p>\n

The affordable units, which will join 900 others currently under construction in the Mission,\u00a0 <\/span>will be paid for by property tax returns as well as the Metropolitan Transportation Commission\u2019s JumpStart fund, according to the release.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t want San Francisco to continue to change so significantly, where neighborhoods are neighborhoods that we don\u2019t even recognize anymore, we\u2019re going to have to make an aggressive investment in affordable housing,\u201d Breed said. \u201cThat\u2019s what today is about.\u201d<\/p>\n

San Francisco native Roberto Hernandez, who leads the \u201cOur Mission No Eviction\u201d campaign, has waited five years for the announcement.<\/p>\n

Protesting the development had, until quite recently, appeared an all but a lost cause.<\/p>\n

After community members repeatedly rejected plans for Lennar\u2019s 157-unit project proposal in 2014, the developer proposed including 25 percent affordable housing, paying $1 million to a cultural district and offering more affordable ground-floor space.<\/p>\n

The Board of Supervisors finally approved the project in 2017, but ground was never broken.<\/p>\n

Hernandez has seen the neighborhood change over the years, with friends being forced out. When he went on a low-rider tour across the Mission with Breed recently, at one point they stopped at the 1515 Van Ness Ave.<\/p>\n

I kept an eye on it and never saw the crane come in here and start digging a hole,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cThat just gave me hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Myrna Melgar, the president of San Francisco\u2019s Planning Commission, also reaffirmed the importance of providing affordable housing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want my family close by; I want my community all around me. It\u2019s what makes my life worth living,\u201d Melgar said. \u201cI think there is no more important thing that we\u2019re doing right now than building affordable housing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breed used the opportunity to push for her and Board of Supervisors President Norman Yee\u2019s proposed $600 million affordable housing bond, which will be on the November ballot.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have the money to buy the site, but we need the money to build it,\u201d Breed said. \u201cOur future is depending on it. I don\u2019t want what happened to so many of us who actually grew up in this city: born and raised, and then we turned around and we looked and we were wondering, \u2018Where\u2019s our community?\u201d<\/p>\n

Once the Board approves the site\u2019s purchase\u2014and upon identifying funding for the construction\u2014San Francisco will choose a developer to lead the project. Once complete, it would be the eighth affordable housing project in the Mission, bringing the neighborhood\u2019s count of affordable units to more than a thousand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
