<\/b>San Francisco\u2019s Ilyich Yasuchi Sato\u2014perhaps better known by his rap alias Equipto\u2014continues to make it his duty to stand up for what he believes in. His activism has landed him in handcuffs and local headlines, and has also made him a prominent figure in the struggle for equality among the Black and Brown community in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

His most recent brush with law enforcement occurred a few weeks ago as he was performing his regular duties as master of ceremonies at the Black and Brown Social Club in the Mission District. He and the attendees witnessed the mistreatment of a young Black male being arrested by SFPD officers. Equipto quickly began to film what was happening.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s on the ground, not comfortable. We\u2019re over there filming in outrage, my mother is there,\u201d Equipto said. \u201cWe were trying to figure out what had happened; we were trying to dig deeper in the situation, we were thinking, \u2018Why is this kid getting arrested?\u2019 They pick him back up\u2014and you can see in the footage too\u2014they\u2019re handcuffing him, and they kick him in the leg and bring him down again. I\u2019m not sure why those kinds of tactics have to be applied.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to his mother, Maria Cristina Gutierrez, she and several of the other bystanders attempted to intervene and police threatened to arrest her. It was then that Equipto jumped in. As tension began to mount, the officers became more aggressive towards Equipto. They surrounded the rapper and eventually arrested him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey put on the cuffs on ridiculously tight, and all they kept telling me was when I was down is to stop resisting, and I\u2019m like \u2018I can\u2019t even breath.\u2019 There was a point in time that in my mind, I thought, \u2018I\u2019m going to die or pass out,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Following his detainment, SFPD escorted Equipto to the Mission District Police Station for \u201cresisting arrest.\u201d As word spread about the arrest, a protest began to unfold outside of the station.<\/p>\n

Equipto\u2019s stance on the police has always been oppositional. Stemming from injustices that the police have committed against the Black and Brown communities, Equipto has made it known publicly that he is anti-police.<\/p>\n

After the killing of Mario Woods by the SFPD on Dec. 2, 2015, Equipto he denounced the SFPD and he has continued to hold the department to account since.<\/p>\n

\u201c2 years ago today Mario Woods was murdered by the @SFPD.. FTP FOREVER.!!\u201d he tweeted on Dec. 2, 2017, after the second anniversary of Woods death.<\/p>\n

It was recently reported that Woods\u2019 mother, Gwendolyn Woods, can move forward with her lawsuit against the officers involved in the killing of her son, after a new video that shows the shooting from a different angle surfaced.<\/p>\n

Equipto, like many others, has watched the video.<\/p>\n

\u201cMario goes down on all fours, and the pigs still couldn\u2019t find a way to escalate the situation without murdering him. This reflects the racism and poor training within the SFPD,\u201d Equipto said.<\/p>\n

In April of 2016, the rapper-turned-activist partook in the \u201cFrisco 5\u201d hunger strike in protest of police brutality. He also led a march for 95-miles from San Francisco to Sacramento in protest of police murders.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen him stand up for the youth when they were being harassed, mistreated and murdered,\u201d said Nancy Pili Hernandez, an acquaintance of Equipto, who became familiar with the rapper when he was teaching preschoolers. \u201cHe has chosen to stand up rather than just walking past the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just a day after his arrest, Equipto went to help the Tello family, who were being forcibly evicted from their San Francisco home by the Sheriff\u2019s Department. With San Francisco being the epicenter of the Bay Area\u2019s housing crisis, many families like the Tello family are being forced to leave their homes and abandon their lives in the city they grew up in.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a systemic problem, the gentrification, the colonization, the displacement,\u201d said Equipto. \u201cWhat we\u2019re dealing with in police departments and police officers \u2026\u00a0 <\/span>You can\u2019t put a band-aid on these problems and expect us to heal.\u201d<\/p>\n

As housing prices continue to rise and gentrification progresses, the danger for Black and Brown becomes even greater. Equipto has made it his mission to use his platform to give a voice to the important issues he believes in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want people to know that at the end of the day, I\u2019m just like everyone else, as far as the person who works hard, that wants justice for its people, that doesn\u2019t like seeing are people being beaten and killed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also regularly associates himself with organizations that protect and raise awareness for his people. Groups like Frisco Cop Watch, Black and Brown Social Club, and Mother\u2019s on the March, are all part of his quest to raising activism within his community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about the participation and leading by example,\u201d said Equipto. \u201cYou lead your life through example. My life and the platform that I worked hard for through the years, being an artist, and trying to curate my style, I learned that I have to use my voice for important issues.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
