Most people associate classically trained dancers with ballet. Vanessa Sanchez\u2019s new production \u201cPachuquismo,\u201d which opens Sept.15 at Dance Mission Theater, aims to challenge those preconceptions. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Directed produced and choreographed by Sanchez, \u201cPachuquismo,\u201d features \u201can all female tap and Son Jarocho [the regional folk music of Veracruz, Mexico] performance of Chicanx culture, Pachucas, and the Zoot Suit Riots,\u201d according to the show\u2019s flier.<\/p>\n

The audience will be told a story they\u2019ve most likely never heard: the story of Los Angeles\u2019 Zoot Suit Riots, but told through the female perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe women are never talked about,\u201d said Sanchez. \u201cAnd if they are, they\u2019re either homemakers or putas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Through extensive research and numerous trips to Los Angeles\u2019 local libraries, Sanchez has done her best to craft a narrative, told by women through dance, of the turbulent time in Chicano history of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

In Sanchez\u2019 performance, you\u2019re more likely to find \u201cbrujas\u201d and women proudly wearing shirts that proclaim, \u201cSomos Chingonas,\u201d than swans and ballerinas in pink. <\/span><\/p>\n

These ladies are every bit the equal of those ballerinas in pink however. Sanchez has been tap-dancing since she was four years old; she was born and raised in the Bay Area, but said she \u201cnever really fit in with the other dancers, because they were White.\u201d<\/p>\n

That realization led Sanchez to move to Veracruz to study \u201czapateado,\u201d a percussive dance that is most often performed on top of a wooden platform, as a way to feel closer to her Mexican heritage. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to know where my family came from,\u201d said Sanchez. \u201cI connect with things through dance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanchez\u2019 time in Veracruz was fruitful, as it was there that she laid the foundation for the future show that would eventually turn into \u201cPachuquismo.\u201d<\/p>\n

She and friend Violeta Romero, created and developed a new style of dancing called \u201czap-a-tap,\u201d that blends the traditional <\/span>zapateado <\/span><\/i>Veracruzano with tap-dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n

At once chest-pounding and graceful, the result is a syncopated dance that leaves the viewer in need of a second opportunity to catch it all, with rhythms complex enough to make many drummers afraid.<\/p>\n

Sanchez described how the show has evolved as time has gone on. The initial performance a seven-minute dance trio show in 2016, has grown to the 75-minute \u201cPachuquismo,\u201d which now features a total cast of 10 musicians, singers and dancers.<\/p>\n

Maria Anaya, 35, has done multiple shows with Sanchez after meeting at a joint show that both their dance troupes participated in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat makes this really special is having an all-female cast,\u201d said Anaya. \u201cThe big picture is, that its strong women coming together.<\/p>\n

Anaya hopes to inspire others to explore their culture with \u201cPachuquismo.\u201d She fought back emotion and tears as she described the vibrant Mexican and Chicano history that they are portraying.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have something beautiful to offer. We have our time and place in history,\u201d said Anaya. \u201cOur culture is rich.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sandy Vazquez is doing her first show with Sanchez, but the director has already left an impression on the 24-year-old dancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s such a multi-talented woman, I mean, the breadth of knowledge alone,\u201d said Vasquez. \u201cJust watching the way Vanessa was able to communicate with the musicians. To be able to communicate a whole show and vision was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show is something the Chicana from Los Angeles claims, \u201cI\u2019ve always dreamt of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vasquez described the same problems Sanchez had fitting in with other dancers and highlighted the lack of representation in dancer circles. Thanks to Sanchez\u2019 show, Vasquez has an outlet to dance the music of her culture.<\/p>\n

Alisa Guardiola, 26, has done three shows with Sanchez and landed her first gig with her by sending in an audition tape filmed from her family living room in Texas.<\/p>\n

Guardiola calls Sanchez \u201ca mastermind,\u201d and said she is constantly impressed by the amount of grace it takes on Sanchez\u2019 part to blend zapateado<\/span> and tap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guardiola said the show gives her a closer connection to her ancestors. She shared that as the youngest of her family, she has missed much of her family\u2019s history and the show affords her a chance to be closer to them as well as she continues to search for her own identity as a Chicana.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis show is modern, important and relevant,\u201d said Guardiola.\u201dIt\u2019s historically and culturally important as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hopes the audience actively thinks about the piece of history that she, Sanchez and the other cast members are performing.<\/p>\n

Hard work has seen Sanchez\u2019 exploration of her Chicano heritage develop from a three-person performance into its current form. She hopes to take the show on the road to cities like Los Angeles, Oakland, Fresno and San Jose.<\/p>\n

After seeing \u201cPachuquismo,\u201d the audience will be expecting Sanchez to pull it off.<\/p>\n
