Photo: Mabel Jim\u00e9nez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Malaquias Montoya\u2014a renowned artist and pioneering figure during the Chicano arts movement of the \u201860s and \u201870s\u2014his art is all about social justice, and his upcoming exhibition at Acci\u00f3n Latina\u2019s Juan R. Fuentes Gallery is no exception. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt of Struggle, Works by Malaquias Montoya,\u201d which opens March 10, will feature a collection of politically themed posters from across the artist\u2019s career. Montoya describes the work as speaking to social injustices that were relevant in previous eras and issues that are still happening now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the issues are pretty much the same as what they were back then,\u201d said Montoya.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37035\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37035\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_02web.jpg?quality=89&#038;ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37035\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_02web.jpg?resize=400%2C543&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_02web.jpg?w=576&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 576w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_02web.jpg?resize=184%2C250&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 184w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_02web.jpg?resize=354%2C480&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 354w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vietnam Aztlan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montoya, 79, grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and traveled with his family to California during the summers to work in the fields, harvesting peaches, grapes and apricots. He said that his migrant upbringing working in the fields along many immigrant workers has inspired his craft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montoya was raised by a single mother who encouraged him to attend school, hoping that education would provide a path for him out of the fields. He also credits his mother for giving him the discipline to pursue his goals and aspirations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montoya started sketching in the fourth grade\u2014mainly drawing students around him. He said he enjoyed school because it provided him with his early tools of the trade, crayons and pencils. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later on, Montoya moved to San Jose where he got a full time job silkscreening. He said it was his boss who recommended that he take classes in commercial art, which he did, enrolling at U.C. Berkeley. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He began making posters due to the high demand during the Civil Rights era, posters that spoke to different political issues, like the Vietnam War and the Third World strike. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37037\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37037\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_03web.jpg?quality=89&#038;ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37037\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_03web.jpg?resize=400%2C546&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_03web.jpg?w=576&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 576w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_03web.jpg?resize=183%2C250&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 183w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_03web.jpg?resize=352%2C480&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 352w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spreading Democracy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe idea of using artwork to speak about issues that were taking place,\u201d Montoya said. \u201cI found it to be a really good way for me to use my art and give a voice to those people who don\u2019t have a voice.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also describes his art as pointing fingers at those responsible for the living conditions that people of color face every day\u2014injustices and the exploitation of a capitalist system. But Montoya\u2019s work doesn\u2019t only pertain to issues in the United States, it\u2019s relevant internationally, in Africa and Central America for instance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He credits his inspiration to reading many books and keeping up with news. For Montoya, there is always something going on in the world that needs to be spoken of. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the first thing is, I walk in to the studio, I pick up a pencil and I\u2019ll start reading \u2026 and before I know it, I\u2019m sketching on a piece of paper,\u201d Montoya said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montoya has had a profound influence the Chicano Art Movement. Alongside his brother Jose, he founded the Mexican-American Liberation Art Front (MALAF) based in East Oakland, a movement that has encouraged people to gather and discuss important issues of the time. He and a small collective of artists began meeting every Friday at a friend&#8217;s house in Berkeley to share ideas, and more importantly speak of were their art was going to be exhibited, and how their pieces were going to influence people around them. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37040\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37040\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_04web.jpg?quality=89&#038;ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37040\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_04web.jpg?resize=400%2C534&#038;quality=89&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_04web.jpg?w=576&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 576w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_04web.jpg?resize=187%2C250&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 187w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Malaquias_04web.jpg?resize=360%2C480&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37040\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yo Soy Chicano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montoya, who is now retired, once taught silk screening, mural painting and the history of Chicano art and culture. He continues to lecture about poster making and works with youth at Taller Arte De El Nuevo Amanecer, the studio he co-founded in Woodland, just north of U.C. Davis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Montoya continues to make posters. He created one of Donald Trump and titled it \u201cTrump Dog.\u201d Montoya calls for everyone to remain awake and present to fight against injustice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn a way, we are responsible for letting [Trump] become President,\u201d he said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t do enough\u2026 But sometimes that happens to us because the system puts us to sleep in a way. Nos dormimos. And before you know it, you wake up, and it\u2019s a nightmare.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also encourages people to join a movement that helps immigrant communities, and hopes to inspire people with his creations. \u201cI hope that my work empowers people to make them feel that they have a right to work against injustice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cArt of Struggle, Works by Malaquias Montoya\u201d opens Saturday, March 10 at 5 p.m. at Acci\u00f3n Latina\u2019s Juan R.
