By David Rodriguez &#8220;][su_audio url=&#8221;https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/the_invisible_condition_final.m4a&#8221;] [\/su_box]<\/p>\n<p>Before President Barack Obama initiated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program\u2014which granted undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children temporary legal stay and work permits\u2014Jenny faced another issue in addition to being undocumented: mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>A citizen of Australia whose family immigrated there from Xinjiang, China, Jenny and her family moved around due to her father\u2019s job. Jenny, who requested not to state her last name, and her family eventually immigrated to Chicago on visas when she was 10 years old.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2007, Jenny\u2019s visa expired. As an undocumented immigrant, Jenny found it hard paying for college\u2014and that took its toll.<\/p>\n<p><b>The undocumented student experience <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Jenny didn\u2019t have much difficulty with academics, until her last semester.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I got really depressed because I knew I felt very isolated,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Her parents paid for her first year of college by selling one of the homes they had invested in. After a family friend decided not to co-sign a loan for her third year, Jenny said she wasn\u2019t able to pay her tuition. With her depression intensifying, Jenny sought help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried talking to some school admissions counselors, but like I said they were all unhelpful,\u201d she said. \u201cThey didn&#8217;t know how to deal with the situation. They told me to go see like a therapist or something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several mental breakdowns followed. When Jenny\u2019s manic episodes would disrupt class, her professors called her \u201cimmature.\u201d She described her teacher\u2019s lack of acknowledging her depression as insensitive.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPaying for tuition was just so stressful and like me, feeling so isolated, caused some like psychotic breaks with reality,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From 2009 through 2010, Jenny said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. From the stress of being undocumented, Jenny was hospitalized four times, and arrested and sent to jail three times on charges of theft, trespassing, and property damage, all for which she was acquitted.<\/p>\n<p>[su_youtube url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zNG15pHbteQ&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>Not alone<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenny had these mental breakdowns around 2009, prior to DACA being initiated. And with DACA having been terminated in September, Jenny now wonders what the future holds for her mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve been trying to figure out&#8230;you know&#8230;like how am I going to survive,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause I recognize this is like the exact same circumstance that led to me breaking down before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health is a huge issue in the immigrant youth community, according to Jorge-Mario Cabrera, communications director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the politics that surround DACA and the possible end of an era of dreams, the future for many DACA recipients seems bleak at the moment,\u201d wrote Cabrera in an email.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also wrote that at the community level, \u201cthe availability of mental health services to address the needs of undocumented immigrants, the trauma that this status presents, is almost zero.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[su_youtube url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BmM2v0udS1w&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>DACA and overcoming mental health issues<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenny currently works as a Software Development Engineer in Test and goes to Depaul University in Chicago, where she studies Computer Science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She credits DACA with granting her a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to join the workforce was a great psychological benefit,\u201d she said. \u201cI finally had the freedom to do regular things with my friends and know what it is like to just live as a regular human being in America. Diana has a goal of becoming a mental health professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe current situation is hurting us physically and mentally. Our lives are already on the line,\u201d said Diana. \u201cWe don&#8217;t know what our future holds. Without a permanent solution like the DREAM ACT, our futures are in peril.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Jenny, she said being undocumented, or DACAmented, and having a mental illness is like having an invisible condition. But, she reiterates, talking about it helps knowing you\u2019re not the only one associated with a stigma. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI just mostly want to say to other DACAmented people\u2026you&#8217;re definitely not alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[su_box title=&#8221;The Invisible Condition.
