Photo: Alejandro Pedrosa\/Worldjunkies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><\/b>Puerto Rican singer Ileana \u201ciLe\u201d Cabra Joglar is touring the United States following her recent Grammy award winning album, \u201ciLevitable,\u201d and is set to make her way to the the Bay Area to perform at the Social Hall SF on Nov. 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">This past February, iLe\u2014who sang alongside her two brothers, Ren\u00e9 P\u00e9rez Joglar \u201cResidente\u201d and Eduardo Cabra \u201cVisitante\u201d for 10 years during her stint with Calle 13\u2014released her solo debut \u201ciLevitable,\u201d which won the Grammy for \u201cbest Latin rock, urban or alternative album.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201c[Winning a Grammy] was very surprising for me and I didn\u2019t think it would happen with my first album,\u201d iLe said. \u201cBut winning truly made me happy\u2026It\u2019s not a goal, but something I do appreciate and it\u2019s good that the hard work is recognized. But for me, the best satisfaction I get is being happy with my work and enjoying what I do which is art and music. That\u2019s what I value the most, that to me is the accomplishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">But not all has been easy or delightful for the artist from Santurce, Puerto Rico. These past few months have been especially difficult after Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc throughout the island. iLe and her band have been without electricity on the island but have managed to continue to work through the challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cIt has all been very tough and it\u2019s something we\u2019re all still processing,\u201d iLe said of the devastation in Puerto Rico. \u201cIt\u2019s been more than a month, almost two months that we\u2019re still without electricity. We have water, but there are still other places where people don\u2019t have any water or electricity. Even since Hurricane Irma, and it all has truly been unfortunate. Photo: Alejandro Pedrosa\/Worldjunkies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p5\">As for her music and her solo album, iLe spoke of her passion of Caribbean music, explaining that her album is composed of a lot of Caribbean rhythms, but also that it was important for her to explore with other types of rhythms and genres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The young vocalist has gone on to complete other projects such as co-writing and performing the theme song of the acclaimed Netflix and Univision show, \u201cEl Chapo,\u201d and she sang the Puerto Rican National Anthem during the 2012 boxing match between Miguel Cotto vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">The young Puerto Rican artist comes from a prominent artistic background as she\u2019s the daughter of theater actress Flor Joglar de Gracia and musician Jos\u00e9 Cabra Gonz\u00e1lez. In her album, which was released in June 2016, iLe pays tribute to her late grandmother, Flor Amelia de Gracia, with songs \u201cQui\u00e9n Eres T\u00fa,\u201d and \u201cDolor,\u201d which were written by her talented grandmother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cMy grandmother used to compose songs and sang beautifully,\u201d she said. \u201cFor her, music was the most important thing and that\u2019s something she instilled in all of her grandchildren. It\u2019s something we hold dear to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201ciLevitable\u201d isn\u2019t just about rhythm and beats. iLe said this album is about expressing emotions and feelings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\">\u201cMost of the composers of the album are women,\u201d said iLe. \u201cComposed by my sister Milena Perez, my grandmother Flor Amelia de Gracia, and myself.
