<\/b>In response to President Donald Trump\u2019s proposed border wall, the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra & Chorus (GGSOC) will open this season with \u201c\u00a1Viva Mexico! Beyond Border Walls,\u201d a program that embraces the culture and music traditions of Mexico.<\/p>\n

With live classical music by Music Director\/Maestro Urs Leonhardt Steiner, the program will open with special guest chorus Coro Redes y Cantos de Chapala, led by Director General Mois\u00e9s Real G\u00f3mez, arriving from the state of Jalisco, Mexico. They will be performing a mix of historic folksongs and ballads.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to do something artistic with the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, and connect Mexico with what Trump has said on Mexico,\u201d said Steiner, who is originally from Switzerland. \u201cRight now we are also dealing with three women singers who were denied visas, they performed last year for the D\u00eda de los Muertos festivities, but this year it\u2019s just become more difficult even with the minister of culture involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since 1989, Steiner and the GGSOC have been on a mission to reach out to diverse ethnic communities internationally and in the Bay Area with classical music.<\/p>\n

Last season they learned to perform in Mandarin for \u201cAsk the Sky and the Earth,\u201d by Hong Kong composer, Tony Wok to reach out to the Chinese community.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s show will also feature special guests like local conductor Martha Rodr\u00edguez-Salazar, and featured soloists Alicia Naylor Guerrero, Zahra Rostchild, Joel Ponce and Gaspard Mbole.<\/p>\n

Martha Rodr\u00edguez-Salazar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Mexican, and the generosity of Maestro Steiner in this performance, as he tries to create a good relationship between Mexico and the United States, considering that our political situation now, expresses a feeling of empathy,\u201d said Rodr\u00edguez-Salazar.<\/p>\n

Rodr\u00edguez-Salazar has a musical career that includes work as a conductor, flutist, mezzo-soprano, teacher and producer. She was recognized in 2011 as a \u201cLuminary\u201d by the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco, and most recently received the \u201cExcelencia Latina\u201d award by LAM and Mundo Fox in 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis performance represents my family and ancestors. It\u2019s very special to be able to sing and listen to music that my people have composed,\u201d said high mezzo-soprano soloist, Alicia Naylor Guerrero, who is a freshman at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts. \u201cThe song I\u2019m singing \u201cM\u00e9xico Lindo y Querido\u201d has an unscripted meaning that says, \u2018If I die, I want you to take me to Mexico, my home, my people.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The program for \u201c\u00a1Viva Mexico! Beyond Border Walls\u201d will also include: \u201cHuapango\u201d by Jos\u00e9 Pablo Moncayo, \u201cEl Sal\u00f3n M\u00e9xico\u201d by Aaron Copland, \u201cCanciones de mi Tierra\u201d by Nicaraguan composer Carlos Gonz\u00e1lez Siles, \u201cCoyoac\u00e1n\u201d by Mexico City composer Antonio Flores and \u201cCuliac\u00e1n Suite\u201d by Mexico City composer Eduardo Gamboa.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018\u00a1Viva Mexico! Beyond Border Walls,\u2019 will allow us to keep connecting with other traditions and people of other ethnicities,\u201d said Maestro Steiner. \u201cAs an orchestra in the city it gives us an opportunity to be different because we have this attitude of making things different, allowing all communities to become part of the performance and audience.\u201d<\/p>\n
