“This is a state of emergency,” Reiko Redmonde said during a panel discussion at the University of San Francisco May 7, entitled “Is This Fascism?”<\/p>\n

The panel was organized by the San Francisco Gray Panthers, with the goal of analyzing fascist regimes, discussing the political uproar during oppressive governments, and comparing white supremacist dictators in the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

“No one is too young, too busy or too old to take on the responsibility of expelling the Trump-Pence regime,” Redmonde said. “It is a fascist regime, and for the future of humanity and the planet, the people must expel this regime.”<\/p>\n

Redmonde, one of five participating panelists, is an activist for Refuse Fascism and in charge of Revolution Books in Berkeley. In his view, the current administration is working to intensify the oppressive nature of American society, “with aggressions against immigrants, Muslims, women, blacks, Mexicans, LGBTQ people, science and the environment.”<\/p>\n

He explained the difference, in his understanding, between a “bourgeois democracy” in which the government follows a constitution and a rule of law (although it does not apply equally to all) and fascism, in which the government rejects constitutional rules And attacks the Press, restricting critical thinking and attacking the very concept of truth itself. “<\/p>\n

Panelist James Dahlgren, a toxicologist and internist at the San Jose Unitarian-Universalist Church, said that a common way for a fascist government to establish a dominant population is to target members of society and make them feel inferior.<\/p>\n

Dahlgren mentioned the scapegoats, which was how Hitler persuaded the Germans to blame the Jews for their problems, and that now President Trump is addressing Muslims, refugees and immigrants in a similar way.<\/p>\n
