Via Flickr Creative Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We at Breathe California\u2019s Project E-NUFF surveyed 150 high school students in San Francisco. \u00a0We found that two-thirds of the students who used \u201cblunts\u201d [marijuana cigars] preferred flavored blunts, and that half \u00a0of the students who used e-cigarettes preferred flavored e-cigarettes. \u00a0The most common answer for why kids thought their peers used flavored tobacco was that, \u201cIt tastes good.\u201d \u00a0Almost 90 percent of the students who thought flavored tobacco products were harmful also thought stores in San Francisco should stop selling it. \u00a0We also conducted a focus group of adults in the Bayview about flavored tobacco and youth, and one participant notably stated, \u201cYoung people using these products &#8230; don\u2019t have to wait until they\u2019re 21. \u00a0It\u2019s easy access.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project E-NUFF wants San Francisco to adopt a policy that will protect youth by ending the sale of flavored tobacco in San Francisco. \u00a0In 2009, Congress prohibited almost all flavors of cigarettes, but failed to end the sale of menthol cigarettes, or flavors in other tobacco products. This policy would close that loophole in San Francisco and make sure that cigarette companies could not target kids with flavors in any tobacco products. \u00a0It will reduce tobacco use among San Francisco youth, especially minority, disadvantaged, and low-income youth who are heavily targeted by the tobacco industry. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearby, Santa Clara County has already ended the sale of flavored tobacco for all of its unincorporated areas, and Oakland is now considering similar regulations. \u00a0New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Providence, RI and Berkeley have already passed laws strongly restricting it. \u00a0San Francisco, a city known for effective health and social justice issue policies, should join these leading cities and counties in positively affecting the public\u2019s health by ending the sale of flavored tobacco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flavors mask the taste of tobacco, but not the
