<\/b>San Francisco leaders are unifying to discuss how to resist President Trump\u2019s recent executive actions.<\/p>\n

On Feb. 23, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi held a press conference following a roundtable discussion at the San Francisco Federal Building to examine the immigration and refugee ban, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportations, sanctuary cities, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).<\/p>\n

The conversation included representatives from human rights organizations such as the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach, United Muslims of America Interfaith Alliance, the Central American Resource Center, and other organizations that represent marginalized communities.<\/p>\n

Since the release of President Trump\u2019s immigration and refugee ban, California has seen ICE raiding communities and targeting innocent individuals.<\/p>\n

Pelosi spoke to the events in Santa Cruz on Feb. 13, in which Homeland Security and local police officers arrested 10 individuals suspected to be involved in MS-13 gang-related crimes\u2014an operation supposedly meant solely to target gang activity. It was later revealed that some individuals were taken to Homeland Security under the assumption they were undocumented immigrants, despite no proven involvement in criminal activity.<\/p>\n

Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said ICE conducted the raid in secret and accused high-ranking members of Homeland Security of lying to his department about the raid including immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis flies in the face of the values that our community holds very deeply,\u201d Vogel said at a press conference on Feb. 13. \u201cThe community has an absolute right to be angry over this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelosi noted that millions of undocumented people in our country are exposed to those types of distorting tactics, discussing how ICE has gone into communities questioning people at random.<\/p>\n

Pelosi said she thought Homeland Security was targeting people who had broken the law in a serious way. \u201cBut instead they have used status as a violation of the law,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not what prosecutorial discretion is about; that\u2019s no discretion at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Pappas, executive director at the Interfaith Council, reported that a similar incident occurred in San Francisco\u2019s Mission District. On Jan. 26, four ICE agents stopped by the Good Samaritan Family Resource Center looking for someone. Pappas noted that they came without warrants, and \u201ctraumatized the staff and children.\u201d<\/p>\n

To combat this kind of injustice, Pelosi and a number of other leaders in the discussion are supporting Senate Bill 54, the California Values Act, and Senate Bill 31, the California Religious Freedom Act. Both bills are currently pending in the California legislature. According to Aarti Kohli of Advancing Justice \u2013 Asian Law Caucus, these bills intend to separate federal law enforcement from local law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not the job of local police to support federal immigration enforcement,\u201d said Kohli.<\/p>\n

Local officials have challenged President Trump\u2019s recent order to withhold federal funding for sanctuary cities, San Francisco being the first city to sue the administration. City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a lawsuit on Jan. 31, alleging that the administration\u2019s executive order violated the 10th Amendment.<\/p>\n

\u201c[These lawsuits] have strong arguments for protection but I think that there is a threat,\u201d said Dean Ito Taylor, executive director of API Legal Outreach.<\/p>\n

Lariza Dugan Cuadra of the Central American Resource Center emphasized that regardless of President Trump\u2019s orders, \u201cWe make sure that people know their rights because no matter what your status is you still have rights in this country and we\u2019re working to create systems of protection locally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelosi remains hopeful for those who have been targeted unjustly, as she\u2019s witnessed an outpouring of support for immigrant communities across the country from law firms offering pro bono assistance to vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople on our soil have rights, and they have rights to representation,\u201d Pelosi said.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen if the Trump administration will attempt to repeal DACA, the executive order issued under the Obama administration that allows people who came to the United States as children to request work authorization and temporary legal stay for two years at a time.<\/p>\n

Pelosi also addressed the issue of refugee children, and how they are \u201csubject to the most stringent vetting in all of our immigration processes.\u201d A supporter of the Refugee Resettlement Program, Pelosi noted, \u201cof the three million refugees that have come into our country, none of them have done us any harm.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
