Across the nation demonstrations against Donald Trump\u2019s racist, verbal assault on Mexicans, Latinos and immigrants have been steadily gaining steam, but activists in San Francisco’s\u00a0Mission District have found a creative way to issue their own beat down: by way of a Donald Trump pi\u00f1ata.<\/p>\n
Adults and children lined up on July 19 to take a swing at the pi\u00f1ata that resembled the Republican presidential candidate during Sunday\u2019s rally of about 50 people at Mission and 16th streets.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe like pi\u00f1atas, but we also like politics,\u201d said Frank Lara, an ANSWER Coalition organizer, as he made his way up a small ladder to hoist the rope that suspended the candy-filled figure, which was fitted with a paper-blue suit, red tie and Trump\u2019s famous hairdo.<\/p>\n
Many in the crowd took the opportunity to take selfie\u2019s with the Trump pi\u00f1ata before it was too late.<\/p>\n
Participants chanted the traditional Mexican folkloric song \u201cDale, Dale, Dale, no pierdas el tino\u2026\u201d (Spanish for \u201cHit, hit, hit, don\u2019t lose your aim\u2026\u201d) and lined up to take their best shot at the pi\u00f1ata with a wooden stick.<\/p>\n
Veering from Mexican tradition however, participants weren\u2019t required to wear a blindfold.<\/p>\n
After just a few participants, candy burst from the pi\u00f1ata, prompting someone in the crowd to yell that money should have flown out of it.<\/p>\n
When\u00a0the pi\u00f1ata was battered beyond tatters, children quickly picked the candy off the ground as adults behind them cheered and laughed.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of the rally, Aaron Peskin, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and Jose Carlos, from the American Postal Workers Union, spoke at the rally condemning Trump\u2019s comments on immigrants and the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey love picking on San Francisco because San Francisco values are the values of a real, open society,\u201d Peskin said.<\/p>\n
Peskin praised San Francisco for being one of the first to implement a city-specific minimum wage law, universal healthcare before Obama\u2019s presidency and sanctuary laws that helped shelter Central Americans who fled the terror of their war-torn countries in the 1980s.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe came here to work and give our families a future,\u201d Carlos, who came to the United States from Peru 30 years ago, said in Spanish.<\/p>\n
With his campaign slogan being \u201cMake America Great Again,\u201d Trump called Mexicans \u201cdrug dealers,\u201d \u201crapists,\u201d \u201cmurderers,\u201d and \u201ckillers\u201d during his presidential nomination speech in mid-June.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t need Donald Trump, who never sees the good we do and the contributions we make to this country,\u201d Carlos said. \u201cWe\u2019re engineers, lawyers, professors and politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n
Protesters then spilled onto the streets for a march along Mission Street. Local police officers managed traffic as protesters chanted and marched to 24th Street on the roadway.<\/p>\n
During the march, a second Donald Trump pi\u00f1ata could be seen pinned to a pole, its mouth taped shut.<\/p>\n
