Sitting in his office in downtown Stockton, CA, 52-year-old Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez remembered the dream he had when he was 10: to be an astronaut.<\/p>\n

He processed that dream while holding the rabbit ears antenna to his family\u2019s TV so that others could see the live broadcast of the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. When he was allowed to let go of the antenna, he walked outside and gazed at the moon. He made his way inside and again saw the moon on the TV screen. Little Jos\u00e9 repeated that several times and reached the conclusion that he wanted to travel into space when he grew up.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me it was amazing that I could see the moon, a quarter of a million miles away, and the astronaut walking [on the Moon] and talking to \u2018Mission Control\u2019 live,\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez said, recalling how Walter Cronkite recounted what astronaut Eugene Cernan was doing. \u201cThat fascinated me and I said, \u2018This is what I want to do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

From farmworker to NASA engineer<\/strong><\/p>\n

The story of Hernandez, who was born to Mexican immigrants from La Piedad, Michoacan, in French Camp near Stockton, is full of contrasts. He worked in the fields as a child beside his parents and three brothers in various fruit and vegetable harvests in California.<\/p>\n

Hern\u00e1ndez recalled the conversation he had with his father the day he revealed his dreams of being an astronaut. First, Don Salvador sat him down in the kitchen for a \u201cman to man\u201d talk.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that moment, when he said \u2018the kitchen,\u2019 I got scared,\u201d confessed Hern\u00e1ndez. The kitchen was the place where\u2014in addition to doing homework under the supervision of his mother Julia\u2014\u201djustice was applied\u201d when children misbehaved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you want to be an astronaut?\u201d Salvador asked his son. Hernandez spoke of the fascination inspired by the live broadcast of the moonwalk.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you can do it. Moreover, I will share a recipe of five ingredients, very simple ones. If you follow them to the letter, I promise you can reach your dream,\u201d said his father, who never studied beyond the third grade.
\nThe recipe included: defining what you want to be in life; recognizing how far you are from that goal; creating a map route; studying; and effort.<\/p>\n

The first ingredient was easy. For the second one, Hern\u00e1ndez thought, \u201cwe can\u2019t be any further; we\u2019re farmworkers.\u201d But the fifth was the most important.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe effort that you put in when you\u2019re in the field on Saturdays and Sundays and seven days a week in the summer, when you\u2019re harvesting cucumber, tomato, onions, peaches, cherries, grapes\u2014that same effort you have to put into your studies now, and later in your work,\u201d his father said. \u201cAlways, always, always deliver more than what people expect of you. Mix all of that, son, and that\u2019s the recipe for success in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s road to NASA wasn\u2019t easy; he was rejected 11 times before finally being hired as an engineer. After one of these rejections, he thought of \u201cthrowing in the towel,\u201d but his wife Adela told him that if he didn\u2019t try again, he would experience a lifetime of doubt.<\/p>\n

After about five years of receiving rejection letters, Hern\u00e1ndez asked himself, \u201cWhat do they have that I don\u2019t?\u201d
\nHernandez took a pilot course, then a diving one, and even learned Russian\u2014things all successful candidates had to do.<\/p>\n

Years passed.<\/p>\n

In May 2004, Hern\u00e1ndez, who hadn\u2019t learned to speak English until the age of 12, finally achieved his dream of becoming an astronaut, and in 2009 boarded the space shuttle Discovery. On that mission he made history through a tweet, becoming the first person to use the Spanish language from space.<\/p>\n

Awakening from the dream<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite the joy of being an astronaut, Hern\u00e1ndez confessed that working at NASA had its limitations. After exploring space aboard Discovery, he was invited to various places\u2014especially in Mexico\u2014giving motivational speeches where he told his moving story. But the space agency wouldn\u2019t let him travel very often, or allow him to work on personal projects.<\/p>\n

When he pitched the idea of writing a book to inspire future generations, NASA turned him down because it would be \u201cfor profit.\u201d He suggested donating all of the proceeds, but they didn\u2019t go for that either.<\/p>\n

So in deciding what his next step would be, Hernandez opted to leave NASA.<\/p>\n

In 2011, Hernandez ran for California\u2019s District 10 Congressional seat, but lost to Republican Jeff Denham.<\/p>\n

He now runs a company called \u201cTierra Luna,\u201d the same name of the Mexican restaurant he owned when he lived in Texas. With his engineering studies and experience as an astronaut, Hernandez provides technical advice to governments, like Mexico, on issues such as the purchase and maintenance of communications satellites. He\u2019s also written a book called \u201cReaching for the Stars\u201d and there are talks of making his story into a movie.<\/p>\n

But none of that would be possible if Hernandez hadn\u2019t heeded his father\u2019s advice. After a long and tiring day of harvesting cucumber, Salvador told his sons to remember that moment, because a lifetime of working in the field could be in their future if they didn\u2019t study.<\/p>\n

Hernandez still remembers.<\/p>\n
