A year before I started at El Tecolote, I was on a 49ers practice field in Santa Clara, living the miserable dream of a freelance sports writer. Roughly a dozen of us reporter, wise guys huddled around a then beloved Jim Harbaugh (the soon-to-be former head coach of the aforementioned 49ers) hoping for something good that was worth quoting.<\/p>\n

He happily obliged: \u201cI will die leaning on my staff,\u201d Harbaugh said on June 11, 2013, quoting college football analyst Lou Holtz, who had quoted the biblical Abraham. Since taking the job as editor-in-chief at El Tecolote June on 11, 2014, I have\u2014believe it or not\u2014lived by that. We have produced 25 issues this year, including the one you\u2019re holding here, and none of them would\u2019ve been possible without my staff, or team. This 2014 El Tecolote Year in review is for my boss, Georgiana Hernandez, and all the editors and managers\u2014Atticus Morris, Mabel Jimenez, Katie Beas and Johnny Garcia\u2014who have had my back from the start. And to all of the writers, photographers, translators, interns and volunteers: Thanks for making my job easier.<\/p>\n

In 2014, 53 articles\u2014or 28 percent of El Tecolote\u2019s coverage\u2014shed a spotlight on specific arts events and the role of the arts within the Bay Area\u2019s Latino community.<\/em><\/p>\n

A Historic Designation: Calle 24 Latino Cultural District<\/strong>
\nWith the staff editorial \u201cLatino cultural corridor is just the first step<\/a>\u201d (May 8-21) and Laura Waxmann\u2019s \u201cLatino Cultural Corridor officially designated by the city<\/a>,\u201d (June 5-18), El Tecolote chronicled the Board of Supervisors\u2019 historic designation of San Francisco\u2019s 24th Street corridor in the Mission as the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District.<\/p>\n

Reeling Readers In<\/strong>
\nThroughout the year, our arts and culture editor, I\u00f1aki Fdez de Retana, a film aficionado, gave readers a big screen into the world of film with a total of 14 film-related articles. Some, such as \u201cFilm shares story of Salvadoran poet and revolutionary<\/a>\u201d (May 8-21) and \u201cDocumentary chronicles death of Chicano journalist<\/a>\u201d (April 10-23), written by Camille Taiara, reminded readers of the power of documentaries to educate and inspire. While others, such as \u201cBolivar biopic is well-produced but lacking<\/a>\u201d (Oct. 9-22) and \u201cCesar Chavez: Film Review<\/a>\u201d (March 27-April 9) may have saved readers the price of a ticket by recommending they pass on these movies.<\/p>\n

Retana also provided previews for several film festivals: \u201cSF documentary and Filipino Film Festival in review<\/a>\u201d (June 5-18), \u201cEleven films to watch out for two-week film festival<\/a>\u201d (April 24- May 7), and \u201cReel Latinos: Diverse culture featured in film festival<\/a>\u201d (Sept. 11-24), offering readers sage advice as to the best films to see in these important Bay Area ethnic film events.<\/p>\n

Performing arts<\/strong>
\nEl Tecolote offered ample coverage of performing arts events in 2014. Two of the stand-out shows covered were Cuban band Orquesta Aragon, reviewed by Rudy Ramirez in \u201cCelebrated Charanga Band offers unforgettable concert<\/a>\u201d (April 24-May 7), and the San Francisco Mime Troupe\u2019s premiere production, \u201cRipple Effect,\u201d brought to life for readers by arts and culture editor I\u00f1aki Fdez. Retana in \u201cActing out; Mime Troupe takes on current issues<\/a>\u201d (July 17 -30).<\/p>\n

Rudy Ramirez\u2019s own story of rapture with Latin rock was recounted in \u201cLatin rock professor to perform at Brava Theater<\/a>\u201d (Sept. 25 \u2013 Oct. 8), a preview of Acci\u00f3n Latina\u2019s September event, Sounds from the Streets: A Historical and Musical Celebration of Latin Rock. El Tecolote also honored long-time local performing arts groups such as Loco Bloco and festival organizer Juan Pablo Gutierrez in our articles \u201cLoco Bloco celebrates 20 years<\/a>\u201d (Dec. 4-17) and \u201cDay of the dead: The fight to stay traditional<\/a>\u201d (Nov. 6 \u2013 19).<\/p>\n

Murals and other visual arts<\/strong>
\nWho could imagine El Tecolote over its 44-year history without its coverage of local efforts to create, restore and protect community murals? 2014 was no exception, as evidenced by articles such as \u201cLatest Mission mural a tribute to Carlos Santana<\/a>\u201d (Oct. 23- Nov. 5) by Inaki Fdez de Retana, and the feature stories about the iconic Carnaval Mural at 24 and South Van Ness streets\u2014both by Calindra Revier\u2014\u201cCarnaval Mural to be restored<\/a>\u201d (March 27-April 9) and \u201cCarnaval Mural restoration moves forward<\/a>\u201d (July 17-30).<\/p>\n

In other coverage of the visual arts, writers Eva Martinez and I\u00f1aki Fdez. de Retana honored the life and legacy of Peter Rodriguez and the Mexican Museum that he founded in 1975, in their companion pieces, \u201cMexican Museum founder turns 88<\/a>\u201d and \u201cThe Mexican Museum: One of a kind<\/a>\u201d (June 19 \u2013 July 2).<\/p>\n

In the articles, \u201cExhibit honors Chicano art icon<\/a>\u201d (Oct. 9 \u2013 22), and \u201cLocal artists mourn loss of life, culture<\/a>\u201d (Oct. 23 \u2013 Nov. 5) El Tecolote editor Alexis Terrazas and Laura Waxmann gave readers windows into the iconic art and institutions created by Galeria de la Raza founders, Rene Ya\u00f1ez and now deceased, Ralph Maradiaga.<\/p>\n

Literary arts<\/strong>
\nIn early 2014, writer Dave Ramos reviewed Elena Moya\u2019s new novel, \u201cThe Olive Groves of Belchite,\u201d which he described as a first-rate piece of historical fiction in his review, \u201cBelchite\u2019s ruins reveal scars from Spanish Civil War<\/a>\u201d (Jan. 30-Feb. 12). Two reviews\u2014 \u201cNew book spotlights Cuban Art and Culture<\/a>\u201d (April 10\u201323) by Oscar Palma and \u201cFollowing the Cuban five: author sheds light on controversy<\/a>\u201d (March 13-26) by Keith Burbank\u2014gave readers new insights into Cuban art, culture and politics. In \u201cChicano poet launches new book<\/a>,\u201d (Nov. 20 \u2013 Dec. 3), Nina Serrano (who won the Oakland Josephine Miles 2014 PEN Award for Excellence in Literature this year for her book Heart Strong, Selected Poems 2000-2012) reviewed the newest book of poetry, \u201cBorderless Butterflies: Earth Haikus And Other Poems\u201d by nationally recognized poet, Francisco X. Alarcon.
