Roughly a dozen of us reporter, wise guys huddled around a then beloved Jim Harbaugh (the soon-to-be former head coach of the aforementioned 49ers) hoping for something good that was worth quoting.<\/p>\n<p>He happily obliged: \u201cI will die leaning on my staff,\u201d Harbaugh said on June 11, 2013, quoting college football analyst Lou Holtz, who had quoted the biblical Abraham. Since taking the job as editor-in-chief at El Tecolote June on 11, 2014, I have\u2014believe it or not\u2014lived by that. We have produced 25 issues this year, including the one you\u2019re holding here, and none of them would\u2019ve been possible without my staff, or team. This 2014 El Tecolote Year in review is for my boss, Georgiana Hernandez, and all the editors and managers\u2014Atticus Morris, Mabel Jimenez, Katie Beas and Johnny Garcia\u2014who have had my back from the start. Photo Mabel Jimenez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>A Historic Designation: Calle 24 Latino Cultural District<\/strong><br \/>\nWith the staff editorial \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/commentary\/latino-cultural-corridor-district-designation-is-just-the-first-step\/\">Latino cultural corridor is just the first step<\/a>\u201d (May 8-21) and Laura Waxmann\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/news\/latino-cultural-corridor\/\">Latino Cultural Corridor officially designated by the city<\/a>,\u201d (June 5-18), El Tecolote chronicled the Board of Supervisors\u2019 historic designation of San Francisco\u2019s 24th Street corridor in the Mission as the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reeling Readers In<\/strong><br \/>\nThroughout the year, our arts and culture editor, I\u00f1aki Fdez de Retana, a film aficionado, gave readers a big screen into the world of film with a total of 14 film-related articles. Some, such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/arts_culture\/film-shares-story-of-salvadoran-poet-and-revolutionary\/\">Film shares story of Salvadoran poet and revolutionary<\/a>\u201d (May 8-21) and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/features\/documentary-chronicles-death-of-chicano-journalist\/\">Documentary chronicles death of Chicano journalist<\/a>\u201d (April 10-23), written by Camille Taiara, reminded readers of the power of documentaries to educate and inspire. While others, such as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/features\/documentary-chronicles-death-of-chicano-journalist\/\">Bolivar biopic is well-produced but lacking<\/a>\u201d (Oct. 9-22) and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/arts_culture\/interview-with-diego-luna-director-of-cesar-chavez\/\">Cesar Chavez: Film Review<\/a>\u201d (March 27-April 9) may have saved readers the price of a ticket by recommending they pass on these movies.<\/p>\n<p>Retana also provided previews for several film festivals: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/arts_culture\/sf-documentary-and-filipino-film-festivals-in-review\/\">SF documentary and Filipino Film Festival in review<\/a>\u201d (June 5-18), \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/arts_culture\/eleven-films-to-watch-out-for-at-two-week-film-festival\/\">Eleven films to watch out for two-week film festival<\/a>\u201d (April 24- May 7), and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/arts_culture\/reel-latinos-diverse-culture-featured-in-film-festival\/\">Reel Latinos: Diverse culture featured in film festival<\/a>\u201d (Sept. 11-24), offering readers sage advice as to the best films to see in these important Bay Area ethnic film events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Performing arts<\/strong><br \/>\nEl Tecolote offered ample coverage of performing arts events in 2014. Two of the stand-out shows covered were Cuban band Orquesta Aragon, reviewed by Rudy Ramirez in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/arts_culture\/celebrated-charanga-band-offers-unforgettable-concert\/\">Celebrated Charanga Band offers unforgettable concert<\/a>\u201d (April 24-May 7), and the San Francisco Mime Troupe\u2019s premiere production, \u201cRipple Effect,\u201d brought to life for readers by arts and culture editor I\u00f1aki Fdez. In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/arts_culture\/book-review-francisco-x-alarcons-borderless-butterflies\/\">Chicano poet launches new book<\/a>,\u201d (Nov. 20 \u2013 Dec. 3), Nina Serrano (who won the Oakland Josephine Miles 2014 PEN Award for Excellence in Literature this year for her book Heart Strong, Selected Poems 2000-2012) reviewed the newest book of poetry, \u201cBorderless Butterflies: Earth Haikus And Other Poems\u201d by nationally recognized poet, Francisco X.
