Alarc\u00f3n\u2019s book, \u201cBorderless Butterflies: Earth Haikus and Other Poems,\u201d (Poetic Matrix Press, 2014) reads more like a beautiful experience than a book of poems.<\/p>\n<p>The 159-page book leaves the reader with a sense of both healing and the necessary work needed to preserve Mother Earth, the butterflies and humankind. It\u2019s a book that can be read and browsed many times throughout the years, for insight, refreshment and renewal.<\/p>\n<p>The book is broken up into four sections: earth, fire, water and air. The multilingual poems read as simple as those elements, and like those elements, the poems are profoundly powerful and essential. Juan Felipe Herrera, California\u2019s poet laureate, refers to this simplicity as \u201cground-breaking text\u201d and as a \u201crising inspirational fountain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alarcon&#8217;s inclusive poem \u201cAm\u00e9rica\u201d is offered in four languages: English, Spanish, Irish (Gaelic) and Dutch. Its words reflect the multiplicity of peoples and cultures that make up America:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>booming loud and bright:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201cI am your country too\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em> this Fourth of July\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The English version of the poem offers a Spanish accent over the \u201ce\u201d in America, so the poet is always aware that even in reference to the U.S. Independence Day holiday, America is one continent.<\/p>\n<p>That consciousness permeates Alarc\u00f3n\u2019s work. His focus is on the metaphor of a butterfly crossing the U.S.-Mexico border without documents, transforming itself in four stages and in four generations:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>its long migration<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and start over again<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the marvelous life cycle<\/em><br \/>\n<em> of the monarch butterflies-<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the ultimate borderless<\/em><br \/>\n<em> migrant creatures!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of Alarcon&#8217;s Earth Haikus is based on an image from the Aztec Codex Borbonicus. The Mesoamerican glyph shows a blossoming flower, representing poetry. From the glyph of speech comes this amazing verse:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>monarch butterflies &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> together we can move<\/em><br \/>\n<em> mountains<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This poem, like so many of the haikus in this book, not only conforms itself to the 17 syllables in three lines, but it does so in two languages.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true for the poems \u201cHealers\u201d and \u201cCuranderos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Healers<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>a shooting star falls<\/em><br \/>\n<em> in the middle of nowhere &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> it&#8217;s a healing poem<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>Curanderos<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em> Una estrella fugaz<\/em><br \/>\n<em> en media de la nada &#8211;<\/em><br \/>\n<em> como poema cura<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis mastery of the Haiku and Tanka forms is so completely part of the reading of this beautiful book that one can&#8217;t but feel that it is a deep tribute to the Japanese people as the victims of the Fukushima disaster, in a great solidarity from the Latino world,\u201d said Jack Hirschman, San Francisco\u2019s former poet laureate, noting that haiku\u2019s and tanka\u2019s are both Japanese short poem forms.<\/p>\n<p>Hirschman\u2019s remarks elevate Alarc\u00f3n to the level of a spiritual literary ambassador or statesman, as he has become a spokesperson for the poetic spirit seeking unity and peace in the world. Alarc\u00f3n often coordinates poetry workshops, readings and festivals. He\u2019s also made it a frequent habit to open community events by leading prayers to the four directions. This included El Tecolote&#8217;s celebration of its literary supplement, the Revista Literaria, in August of 2010, which Alarc\u00f3n edited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBorderless Butterflies\u201d offers spiritual uplift and poetically points the ways forward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Poet Francisco X.
