La g\u00fcera mexicana pens\u00f3 que pod\u00eda pelear, pero eso cambi\u00f3 el d\u00eda que entr\u00f3 al gimnasio de boxeo Tiny Baby Face, en Pac\u00edfica, y conoci\u00f3 a Martha Salazar.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa primera vez\u2026 no pod\u00eda ni terminar un round\u201d, logr\u00f3 murmurar Heather Frambach entre agotadas bocanadas de aire de las que van y vienen tan r\u00e1pido que dejan los pulmones doloridos. \u201cPor una raz\u00f3n\u2026 seis minutos de boxeo\u2026 es un infierno\u201d.<\/p>\n

As\u00ed sucede cuando se pelea seis minutos con Salazar \u2014la excampeona mundial de peso pesado femenino\u2014. Frambach aguant\u00f3 ese infierno como parte de su preparaci\u00f3n para hacer historia.<\/p>\n

Frambach va enfrentarse a su compa\u00f1era novata Sarah Kozuma el 31 de agosto en el Sports House en Redwood City durante el cuarto aniversario del Beautiful Brawlers, un evento que convoca a mujer talentosas y que re\u00fane a aficionados al boxeo. El evento constar\u00e1 de veinte encuentros, en los que estar\u00e1n algunos de los mejores luchadores j\u00f3venes de todo el pa\u00eds, incluyendo dos boxeadores de Canad\u00e1 y dos de Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

Frambach y Kozuma son las primeras pesos pesados en luchar en el evento Beautiful Brawlers. Un encuentro de pesos pesados \u2014y mucho menos una de aficionados no pagado\u2014 entre dos mujeres era nada menos que imposible, un hecho que Salazar no ha olvidado.<\/p>\n

Salazar y su amiga cercana, Blanca Guti\u00e9rrez \u2014due\u00f1a de Baby Face Boxing y fundadora de Beautiful Brawlers\u2014 eran aficionadas al kick boxing en los noventas. Por lo menos, lo intentaron mientras que se esforzaron por forjarse una vida competitiva en un mundo de hombres.<\/p>\n

\u201cComo mujeres (entrenadores) nos miraban y dec\u00edan, \u201c\u00a1\u00bfQu\u00e9? Las mujeres no boxean!\u201d, dijo Salazar. \u201cNos trataban como mierda\u201d.
\nEra cercas de entonces cuando todas las dudas y las rizas se hicieron insostenibles para Guti\u00e9rrez.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u00bfSabes qu\u00e9 Martha?\u201d –Guti\u00e9rrez se volte\u00f3 y le dijo a Salazar– \u201cdebemos hacer un show solamente con mujeres. Un d\u00eda lo haremos\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ese d\u00eda lleg\u00f3 en 2011 cuando el primer show de Beautiful Brawlers por fin se llev\u00f3 a cabo. \u201cCasi llor\u00e9\u201d, dijo Salazar. \u201cBlanca estaba como \u2018te dije que lo pod\u00edamos hacer.\u2019 Y lo estamos haciendo\u201d.<\/p>\n

A pesar de que dichos espacios para aficionados, entrenadores y competencia no existieron en los d\u00edas de pelea de Salazar, esta chica Ocotl\u00e1n, Jalisco, M\u00e9xico \u2014que empez\u00f3 a luchar despu\u00e9s de haber sido asaltada por tres chicas samoanas cuando ten\u00eda 13 a\u00f1os\u2014 continu\u00f3 luchando.<\/p>\n

Despu\u00e9s, en 2001, Salazar, de cinco pies nueve y 230 libras, se gan\u00f3 el t\u00edtulo femenino de peso pesado de la Federaci\u00f3n Internacional de Boxeo luego de vencer a la favorita Pamela London Guyana en 2004. La ganadora tendr\u00eda un encuentro por $50,000 con Jackie Frazier-Lyde, hija del excampe\u00f3n peso pesado Joe Frazier. Pero, al ver a \u2018La Sombra\u2019, nombre apropiado al tama\u00f1o de Salazar, Frazier Lyde se ech\u00f3 para atr\u00e1s. Y con ella, se fueron los $50,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo lo hago por el dinero\u201d –Salazar se encogi\u00f3 de hombros– \u201cporque si as\u00ed lo hiciera, pues ahorita estar\u00eda muri\u00e9ndome de hambre. Solo me encanta. Me encanta el deporte. Me encanta la lucha\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ese anhelo por el cuadril\u00e1tero es lo que cautiv\u00f3 a Salazar de una jubilaci\u00f3n de seis a\u00f1os en 2013, cuando pele\u00f3 por ser la n\u00famero uno del peso pesado en el mundo contra Sonya Lamonakis. A pesar de ser un poco m\u00e1s lenta y pesada, Salazar no perdi\u00f3 ni una ronda esa noche.<\/p>\n

\u201cTiene todo lo que se necesita para ser un luchador\u201d, dijo el entrenador de Salazar, Ed Clemens de 71 a\u00f1os de edad. \u201cEs grande y uno pensar\u00eda que no tiene el aire (significando vigor)\u2026 tiene el coraz\u00f3n de un le\u00f3n y es lista. Y para ser un campe\u00f3n, uno tiene que pensar\u201d.<\/p>\n

Viendo a las chicas que van a competir la noche del domingo, muchas con aspiraciones ol\u00edmpicas para el 2016, Salazar todav\u00eda piensa: \u201cA veces deseo haber estado all\u00ed. A veces, le digo a mi madre, \u2018Nac\u00ed demasiado temprano. Debiste haber esperado un poco m\u00e1s tarde\u2019, Salazar r\u00ede. \u201cPero es fant\u00e1stico ver de qu\u00e9 tan lejos hemos venido. Ojal\u00e1 un d\u00eda estas chicas hagan el dinero que estos hombres hacen. Nosotros le ponemos el mismo esfuerzo, tiempo y dedicaci\u00f3n\u201d.<\/p>\n
