{"id":24431,"date":"2014-07-31T10:00:27","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T17:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/?p=24431"},"modified":"2014-08-04T15:40:14","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T22:40:14","slug":"peru-independence-celebrated-with-creole-mass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/en\/peru-independence-celebrated-with-creole-mass\/","title":{"rendered":"Peru independence celebrated with Creole Mass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object id=\"soundslider\" width=\"900\" height=\"535\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\" bgcolor=\"#FFFFFF\"><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"quality\" value=\"high\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"menu\" value=\"false\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/tecomm\/criolla\/soundslider.swf?size=1&amp;format=xml&amp;embed_width=900&amp;embed_height=535\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed id=\"soundslider\" width=\"900\" height=\"535\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/eltecolote.org\/tecomm\/criolla\/soundslider.swf?size=1&amp;format=xml&amp;embed_width=900&amp;embed_height=535\" allowScriptAccess=\"always\" quality=\"high\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" menu=\"false\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" bgcolor=\"#FFFFFF\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>While most Latin American countries celebrate their independence in September, the South American nations of Venezuela, Colombia and Peru do so in July.<\/p>\n<p>The 193rd anniversary of Peru\u2019s independence was celebrated in San Francisco July 26 via a fascinating ceremony at the Mission Dolores Basilica.<\/p>\n<p>General Consul of Peru Candy Gonzalez Chavez, in the presence of her Colombian and Venezuelan counterparts, choked back her emotion and said, \u201c[I] feel proud of our roots, culture and identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the traditional flower wreath adorned on Simon Bolivar\u2019s equestrian statue by San Francisco\u2019s main library, and the raising of a flag at City Hall, this year was the first time that a \u201cCreole Mass\u201d was hosted as a way of giving thanks.<\/p>\n<p>A Creole Mass is a musical work of art of the religious and folk variety. They were introduced in the 1960s, a period in which the Catholic Church relaxed its tradition and stopped demanding that masses be exclusively conducted in Latin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat better way than to celebrate with a Creole Mass, one conducted by our own Chabuca Granda,\u201d the consul said, referring to her country\u2019s diverse Mestizo population, and to the Peruvian singer who waltzed to Creole and Afro-Peruvian rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>Chabuca Granda, a Peruvian singer and composer, composed \u201cCreole Mass\u201d for her daughter\u2019s wedding in 1969. It includes a collection of songs with coastal rhythms and traditional dances such as \u201cZa\u00f1a,\u201d \u201czamacueca,\u201d \u201cmarinera lime\u00f1a,\u201d \u201cfestejo,\u201d \u201cdanza lime\u00f1a,\u201d \u201cvals criollo,\u201d \u201ctriste\u201d and \u201ctondero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event was organized by San Francisco\u2019s General Consulate of Peru and two religious brotherhoods: the Lord of Miracles and St. Martin de Porres. The Rev. Arturo Albano gave the lecture and led the singing of the Pe\u00f1a Community Chorus of Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>A number of musicians contributed to the splendid musical performance. Daniel Zamalloa played guitar; Braulio Barrera and Peta Robles played on the \u201ccaj\u00f3n,\u201d a Peruvian percussion instrument that Spanish flamenco borrowed; Carlos Britto on bass; and Jan Thyer conducted the choir.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 choir members highlighted the strong voices of soloists Marina Lavalle, Braulio Rosa Los Santos and Barrera, who provided the most emotional moments the ceremony for those present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been more than three months of rehearsals&#8230;we have the best soloists,\u201d said Zamalloa, who was in charge of the musical direction. \u201cPeople were excited to hear Peruvian music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giovanna Aliaga, a Peruvian, and Isidro Ramirez, a Mexican, came from San Mateo to attend the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our first time here in the Basilica of Mission Dolores,\u201d said the young couple. \u201cMass with guitar and the caj\u00f3n is very different; [it] makes you come alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peru won its independence on July 28, 1821 by the hand of General Jose de San Martin, who had become hardened by numerous years of struggling for the liberation of Argentina and Chile from Spanish rule.
