Photo Shane Menez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Along the corridor of Balmy Alley and 24th Streets sits a park that reflects the many personalities of the Mission community\u2014it\u2019s a place where families meet, children play and that more than a dozen homeless men call home.<\/p>\n<p>Pamela del Rio, a Mission resident, started walking her dogs regularly at Garfield Park; she has gotten to know some of the homeless men who stay there.<\/p>\n<p>Del Rio said she has tried to find resources that help the men off the streets, but some don\u2019t want the help. \u201cIf they are illegal, they can\u2019t qualify for any of the programs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Michel, a homeless man who preferred not to reveal his real name, said that his adopted family includes one of del Rios four pugs, a dog named \u201cPepe\u201d; or \u201cEl Famoso Pepe,\u201d as the men at the park like to call him.<\/p>\n<p>In San Francisco, roughly 7,350 people are homeless and more than 50 percent of them live without access to shelters, according to a 2013 SFGov homeless count report.<\/p>\n<p>Many of them choose to find friendship and companionship with pets. \u201cYou can see that these men have probably had a dog at some point in the past,\u201d del Rio said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a program called Wonderful Opportunities for Occupants and Fidos (WOOF) was adopted by San Francisco Animal Care &amp; Control (SFACC), Community Housing Partnership and the Mayor\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-week pilot program aimed to connect persons living in supportive housing with an animal in need to present an opportunity to reintegrate the person into their community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe program seemed like a win-win, it helped formerly homeless people back on their feet and it helped animals that may have otherwise gotten euthanized,\u201d del Rio said about the loss of the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud of what we were able to do and I\u2019m hopeful that something will happen,\u201dsaid Bevan Dufty, director of HOPE (Housing Opportunity, Partnerships and Engagement), in reference to the recovery of the program.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to make a donation to the Friends of Animal Care and Control please email <a href=\"http:\/\/helpacc.org\">helpacc.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Along the corridor of Balmy Alley and 24th Streets sits a park that reflects the many personalities of the Mission community\u2014it\u2019s a place where families meet, children play and that more than a dozen homeless men call home. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":35,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"newspack_popups_has_disabled_popups":false,"newspack_featured_image_position":"","newspack_post_subtitle":"","newspack_article_summary_title":"Overview:","newspack_article_summary":"","newspack_hide_updated_date":false,"newspack_show_updated_date":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[598,2590,227,2593,2595,2588,2589,2586,2587],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-22103","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-balmy-alley","tag-friends-of-animal-care-and-control","tag-garfield-park","tag-hope","tag-housing-opportunity-partnerships-and-engagement","tag-san-francisco-animal-care-control","tag-sfacc","tag-wonderful-opportunities-for-occupants-and-fidos","tag-woof","entry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
