Photo Einar Sevilla<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Berkeley cultural center has begun efforts to create a mural to replace its 34-year-old existing mural, which is greatly significant to the community, but has deteriorated over time.<\/p>\n<p>La Pe\u00f1a Cultural Center kicked off its 2nd Skin campaign to save the \u201cSong of Unity\u201d mural, which has been outside its front wall since three years after La Pe\u00f1a opened its doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[La Pe\u00f1a] promotes peace, social justice and cultural understanding through the arts, education and social action,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSong of Unity\u201d was the first 3D collective painting in the Bay Area\u2014adding more history to the famous mural.<\/p>\n<p>The mural symbolizes the values of the center and was painted to reflect Central and South American adversity, triumph and art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mural is the graphic representation of our mission,\u201d Publicity Coordinator Fernando Torres said. \u201cIn consultation with the original artists, we are working on a project to paint a new mural.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>La Pe\u00f1a had hoped to raise $17,000 by July 2, but was able to fundraise a little over $10,000, which was matched by the East Bay Community Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The Fleishhacker Foundation also awarded La Pe\u00f1a a $20,000 grant to support its efforts to give the front wall a \u201csecond skin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new mural will be designed and painted by Trust Your Struggle \u201can artist collective of visual artists, educators and cultural workers dedicated to social justice and community activism through the medium of art,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think La Pe\u00f1a, for us, is a really amazing symbol organization that is very parallel to our mission as a visual artist collective,\u201d TYS artist Cece Carpio said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The mural] is a land mark right now in South Berkeley and North Oakland,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n<p>The community has supported La Pe\u00f1a throughout the years, which is why it will try to preserve the original mural.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new mural will be created in an attempt to bring the same message with a new skin and feel, for the next generation of Berkeley residents,\u201d Carpio said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are hoping that the new [mural] becomes what the old one was: a symbol,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n<p>La Pe\u00f1a will host open community forums on July 22 and Aug. 4 to discuss the design of the new mural and plan a \u201ctake-down ceremony\u201d for the current one.<br \/>\nIf you would like to help La Pe\u00f1a or attend the forums, visit their website <a href=\"http:\/\/lapena.org\">lapena.org<\/a> or call (510) 849-2568.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Berkeley cultural center has begun efforts to create a mural to replace its 34-year-old existing mural, which is greatly significant to the community, but has deteriorated over time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":35,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"newspack_popups_has_disabled_popups":false,"newspack_featured_image_position":"","newspack_post_subtitle":"","newspack_article_summary_title":"Overview:","newspack_article_summary":"","newspack_hide_updated_date":false,"newspack_show_updated_date":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3511],"tags":[1741,1468,1742],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-15525","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-arte-es","tag-berkeley","tag-la-pena-cultural-center","tag-song-of-unity-mural","entry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
