a skeleton taquero standing alone, selling tacos <em>sin carne\u2014<\/em>the Cartoon Art Museum\u2019s current exhibition takes visitors on a wild, visual ride through the minds of Latino comic artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa Raza Comica: A Celebration of the Latino American Experience in the Comic Arts,\u201d features original work by 10 different artists, who explore what it\u2019s like growing up Latino in the United States through clever, humorous and often political and sarcastic art.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The exhibit consists of over 40 pieces that clearly display the personality of each artist.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Many characters explore the interaction between childhood dreams and reality, like illustrations of the \u201cZootador,\u201d a zoot suiter, decked out in his Sunday best\u2014with a luchador mask added for good measure\u2014or the group of mermaids hanging out on the ocean floor.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Each artist\u2019s work explores a particular theme, such as Jose Cabrera\u2019s collection called \u201cLos Elementos,\u201d which examines the four classical elements: earth, fire, water and air.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Male figures camouflage within each element, where the idea of unity between man and nature can be further explored.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Graciela Rodriguez\u2019s collection explores mystery, death and playfulness with characters like the beheaded man who rides a wild horse to an unknown land, and the dead bride in \u201cTil\u2019 Death Do Us Part,\u201d who awaits a fianc\u00e9 she has never met, while bold letters to her right proclaim, \u201cI am not crazy &#8230; and I am not dead&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Most of the artwork utilizes satire and comedy\u2014as one might expect from a comic\u2014but the simplicity of each frame also made its own personal statement.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In \u201cContract for Life,\u201d a comic by Javier Hernandez, there are no love spells, hidden treasures or contract killers&#8211;the contract is to bring someone back to life, not kill them.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cThe purpose for the &#8216;Contract for Life&#8217; story was to introduce this &#8216;reverse-hitman,&#8217; <em>The Wake<\/em>,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cA man who is hired, contracted, to bring a zombie back to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The word \u201cBLAM\u201d explodes from a gun in one scene, while the last words of the story read, \u201cYou have your son back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cHe reunites people\u2014families with deceased loved ones,\u201d Hernandez said. \u201cHe&#8217;s basically pulling people out of what I would consider &#8216;limbo,\u2019 and bringing them back to earth\u2014perhaps for a second chance at life, or other mysterious purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Every now and then the stories within the characters might be linked to real life experiences, a family secret passed on through generations or simple traditions kept alive and retold again and again.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The fascinating world of comic book characters can take on all names, shapes and sizes, and Hernandez encourages young comic artists to boldly publish and promote their own work.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\u201cI&#8217;m a diehard proponent of DIY art,\u201d he said. \u201cCreate your own original work, be bold and fearless and unconventional, but make sure you get it in front of an audience, on your terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa Raza Comica\u2026\u201d will be on display at the Cartoon Art Museum until Sept. 30.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A wild mustang with a headless rider galloping through a place called \u201cElephant Hill\u201d;
