A little more than 109 yards separate Chipta from the Antamina mine and its activities, which has made this company a serious hazard for dozens of indigenous families.<\/p>\n
\nAfter marching for eight days from their communities, indigenous campesinos arrived in the capital March 27, seeking solutions to the serious agrarian problem in their country.The marchers demanded that the Guatemalan government, as well as local, national and international media, address the issues facing the rural campesino majority of the country, including the rampant evictions of indigenous peoples by sugar companies, mines and oil companies. An estimated 15,000 people, including unionists, teachers, students and civil organizations took part in the demonstration, which was organized by the Committee for Campesino Unity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
