Photo Courtesy www.indybay.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the 2011 Latin Grammy Awards, City College Latin American Studies instructor Greg Landau was nominated in the Best Instrumental Music category for producing Omar Sosa\u2019s album \u201cCalma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Latin Grammys was founded in 2000 by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts &amp; Sciences to recognize outstanding achievement in the Spanish and Portuguese-language music industry.<\/p>\n<p>Landau, a Mission District native, is an experienced nominee: This is his second nomination at the Latin Grammys and fifth Grammy nomination overall with three nominations coming from the original (American) Grammys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels really good to be recognized in this way,\u201d said Landau. \u201cEspecially [since it was] low-budget and locally produced where we don\u2019t have big resources or public representatives, just our creativity and passion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Growing up with a father who was a film director and a mother who was a poet and theater director, Landau has been profoundly influenced by the arts. This is manifested in his sprawling resume of music, media, education and installation art.<\/p>\n<p>Landau studied sociology at UC Berkeley and graduated from UC San Diego with a doctoral degree in communications with an emphasis on music as a social force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not interested in studying music scientifically,\u201d said Landau, \u201cbut how music was [used] as a social force and expressed social ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Landau has taught classes in four departments: history, anthropology, music and Latin American &amp; Latino\/a Studies.<\/p>\n<p>He has taught Anthropology 11: Latin American Cultures and Societies and Music 25: Music of Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasizes the cultural significance of music, how it\u2019s been used as a tool to preserve what might otherwise have been lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic is very important in Latin American culture, probably more so than in North America,\u201d said Landau, \u201cbecause of censorship under colonial and post-colonial times, [music] gives people a way to express themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Landau uses Omar Sosa\u2019s album \u201cCalma,\u201d as an example of expression translated through music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalma means calm,\u201d said Landau, \u201cand that\u2019s what it expresses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Landau has been producing music in various genres for 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that people should follow their passion and that I feel that if you want to [follow your dreams] you should do it,\u201d said Landau. \u201cThis is something I always wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Landau is currently producing four albums that are expected to debut in early November 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Sosa\u2019s \u201cCalma\u201d lost the best instrumental award, to the album \u201cForever\u201d by Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the 2011 Latin Grammy Awards, City College Latin American Studies instructor Greg Landau was nominated in the Best Instrumental Music category for producing Omar Sosa\u2019s album \u201cCalma.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":35,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"newspack_popups_has_disabled_popups":false,"newspack_featured_image_position":"","newspack_post_subtitle":"","newspack_article_summary_title":"Overview:","newspack_article_summary":"","newspack_hide_updated_date":false,"newspack_show_updated_date":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[1477,1475,1478,1479,1476],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-12828","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-calma","tag-greg-landau","tag-latin-academy-of-recording-arts-sciences","tag-latin-grammys","tag-omar-sosa","entry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
