Among those presenting were representatives from Roaddawgz, an organization that works directly with young, homeless artists.<\/p>\n<p>Roaddawgz, which provides a creative drop-in center for homeless youth, brought young artists to speak about the center and display their original artwork.<\/p>\n<p>The center was developed by a group of homeless youth in 2000 to serve a population that has historically lacked welcoming safe spaces, especially creative ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single place in the city has the same rules, they make the space restrictive from the start,\u201d said \u201cDavid\u201d, a Roaddawgz participant. \u201cHere it\u2019s really flowing, [It\u2019s] a creative space that gives and brings influence. It builds something: a place of belonging and a place to do our art.\u201d<br \/>\nUnlike a typical drop-in center, Roaddawgz does not require youth to fill out intake forms, and has a more creative, arts based focus.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12412\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12412\" style=\"width: 358px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eltecolote.org\/content\/2011\/12\/artist-sanctuary-serves-homeless-youth\/homeles-art_01\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12412\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12412\" title=\"homeles-art_01\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/homeles-art_01.png?resize=358%2C480&#038;quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/homeles-art_01.png?resize=358%2C480&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 358w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/homeles-art_01.png?resize=600%2C804&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/homeles-art_01.png?resize=186%2C250&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 186w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eltecolote.org\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/homeles-art_01.png?w=800&amp;quality=80&amp;ssl=1 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cThose Damn Dogs\u201d by Leper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cKelly\u201d is one of the program participants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time I went to Roaddawgz, it was my birthday,\u201d \u201cKelly\u201d said. \u201cI walked in and instead of being asked for intake forms, I was asked if I wanted to be in an art show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Machiko Saito, the director of the center, said that she and her colleagues try to provide a non-judgmental environment for participants.<br \/>\n\u201cA lot of our folks can\u2019t conform to society,\u201d she said. \u201cI say, \u2018be yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Larkin Street Youth Services it is estimated that each year approximately 2 million youth are homeless in the United States.
