El Tecolote<\/em> is the voice of San Francisco\u2019s \u201cpueblo.\u201d <\/em>We answer questions and report on news that shape the lives of Latinx people who live or work in the city. Located in the heart of Mission District, we document and amplify the community\u2019s vibrant role in the city\u2019s political, art and cultural scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What We Do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are a bilingual publication focused on local news, arts and culture. You can find our work on our daily website and social media, weekly newsletter, WhatsApp<\/a> and our bi-weekly print newspaper. With a circulation of 7,000, El Tecolote<\/em> is the longest running bilingual (English\/Spanish) newspaper in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our team is a mix of journalists, artists, academics, volunteers and community members who believe community media has the power to strengthen underserved or marginalized groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our newsroom is rooted in a legacy of grassroots, community journalism. In the 70s, Professor Juan Gonzales created a La Raza Studies class at San Francisco State University as a way to channel more Latino people into journalism careers. The final project was to create a bilingual newspaper in English and Spanish. The first edition of El Tecolote<\/em> hit the streets on August 24, 1970.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At El Tecolote<\/em>, we\u2019re committed to training the next generation of journalists. If you\u2019re a student eager to gain hands-on experience in community-first journalism, join us for NewsHub, a 10-week summer program designed to equip aspiring reporters and visual journalists with essential skills. Through workshops, mentorship and networking opportunities, you\u2019ll learn how to tell impactful stories that center underrepresented voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
