Are you a member of the LGBTQ+ Latinx community? Would you like to be a core part of how we deliver quality news and information that meet your needs? If you answered yes, then we’re looking for you!

El Tecolote is on a mission to interview 25 members of the LGBTQ+ Latinx community. If you identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ Latinx community, please consider volunteering time for a conversation ranging 30 minutes to 1 hour in length.

Borealis Philanthropy’s Racial Equity in Journalism Fund (REJ) and the American Press Institute (API) are supporting El Tecolote through creating methods for listening to the local community. As we celebrate El Tecolote’s five decade legacy we want to ensure that we’re recognizing the nuanced perspectives of Latinx identity which have included LGBTQ+ voices from our founding in the 1970s – from our reporting on GALA (the Gay Latino Alliance) in 1976 to more recent coverage of caravans of LGBTQ+ migrants.

More importantly, this project is at the heart of producing stronger journalism that establishes deeper trust and understanding among our community, and it will provide a model for how we amplify more Latinx voices in the future.

Over the next year, API and REJ will provide audience development research and coaching to El Tecolote through methods of listening to community members more effectively.
