The opening celebration for Illuminations: Día de los Muertos 2011 <http://www.somarts.org/dayofthedead/> (October 8–November 5) features music, interactive performance and the unveiling of over 30 altars and installations by more than 80 artists from the Bay Area and beyond.
The opening evening includes a special performance by Herbert Siguenza, of Culture Clash <http://cultureclash.com/> fame. Siguenza, who has been touring the U.S. in a one-person show called A Weekend with Pablo Picasso, will perform and live paint as renowned artist.
The evening also features an artists market and additional performances by contributing artists in their installation spaces, such as Flamenco dance by La Tania and a musical procession of paper calaveras.
